What makes a great website? This is together with search engine optimisation are the two most frequently asked questions I receive. My first response is always to ask "What sites do you like and why?".

Personally I use sites like amazon.co.uk, easyjet.com, ebay.co.uk, and google frequently. Why? Well they are a couple of simple reasons: -

  • They are easy to navigate, I can find what I want easily;
  • They are simply designed, no flashly graphics;
  • They are designed to be used by their customers (not to win an award for the designer);
  • I trust them;
  • It is easy to find my product/flight, buy it, receive confirmation etc and in Amazons case have it delivered;
  • They constantly develop their sites to make use of new technology to improve their customer experience.

Remember you don't  need to re-invent wheels here, browse round sites you like and understand why you like them, why they are popular and what makes them tick.

The next question I ask is, "What do you want to use your site for?". An internet presence to provide more information on your company/business, an online cataologue, or a full e-commerce site. The answer to this question should then dictate the amount of time and money you should spend on your website.

Remember websites should be designed around your customer and should complement your overall marketing strategy. It is not a case of everyone else has one so I need one too!!
